Jamaican cuisine is a mixture of Caribbean dishes with local dishes, and is famous for Jamaican jerk spice, which is integral to it. The national dish is Ackee and saltfish, and you probably won't get a chance to try this food anywhere else. Another local food is called bammy, a flat floury cassava pancake normally eaten during breakfast hours that kind of tastes like corn bread. If you want more meat in them, you can try the jerk flavoured foods such as the most popular one - jerk chicken. There are also curries such as curried chicken and curried goat which are very popular in Jamaica.
Fruit in Jamaica are plentiful and cheap, especially between April and September. You can try the local fruit such as coconut water, pawpaws, star apples, guineps, pineapples, jackfruit, oranges, tangerines, ugli fruit and ortaniques, etc.
Jamaica is home to Red Stripe beer, which is sponsor of many sporting events and exported to many countries in the west. Another local soda including Bigga Cola, Champagne cola or grapefruit soda called "Ting", Ginger beer, Dragon Stout and also Desnoes & Geddes (typically labelled as "D&G"). Note that Jamaican Rum - a local hard drink, is not designed for someone who is drinking it for the first time, so drink with caution!
