Built from 1993 to 1998, Kiasma is a contemporary art museum located on Mannerheimintie in Helsinki, Finland. Its name kiasma, Finnish for chiasma, alludes to the basic conceptual idea of its architect, Steven Holl. In 1992, an architectural design competition to design a contemporary arts museum was held in Helsinki . Five internationally renowned architects participated among whom there was only one US citizen. In 1993 the work Chiasma by the American architect Steven Holl was selected from the 516 competitors.

Actually speaking, the building itself is arguably a work of art . The museum exhibits the contemporary art collection of the Finnish National Gallery founded in 1990. The sometimes unusual collections mostly include works by contemporary Finnish artists and artists from nearby countries. There are also periodical exhibitions.
