Teatro Colón Tavel Guide
The Teatro Colón is ranked the third best opera house in the world by National Geographic, and is acoustically considered to be amongst the five best concert venues in the world.
The first Teatro Colón building was started in 1856 and opened on April 27, 1857. Towards the end of the century it became clear that a new theatre was needed, then, the present theatre opened on 25 May 1908, and last refurbishment from October 2006 to May 2010.
The auditorium is horseshoe-shaped, has 2, 487 seats, standing room for 1, 000 and a stage which is 20 m wide, 15 m high and 20 m deep. With excellent acoustics and modern stage areas, the theatre's interior design features a rich scarlet and gold decor. The cupola contains frescoes painted in 1966, and refurbishment in 2005 – 2010.
